LONGING (Jeff’s song)
A Coupling, 1

Eyes open for the first time,
capturing light, the wide, wild world
awakening before him.

Alert. Understanding.
Conscious. Awake.
Hands work the yielding earth.
Seeds sprout and vines climb.
Harvest follows striving.
Exhaustion coexists with satisfaction.
Then rest.

The human names the creatures, authority offering identity.
Each passes before him with another, life beside life.
Something stirs within him.
Lonely. Craving.
Yearning. Longing.

Hunger, not to satisfy the belly,
but to fill the heart.
Made for knowing.
Created to be known.

In this is life.
